Pregnancy Traditions🟢 Medical Approval

Drinking Saffron (Zafran) Milk in Pregnancy

Traditional Kashmiri Belief:

"Elders recommend drinking warm milk with saffron strands every night to make the baby fair and healthy."

Medical Verdict by Dr. Berkheez Shabir:

Saffron is rich in antioxidants, helps regulate mood, and improves digestion in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. While it does not change skin melanin (which is genetic), 2–3 strands in warm milk at night is safe, soothing, and medically beneficial.

Limit to 2-3 strands per day Best consumed in 2nd and 3rd trimesters Avoid excessive raw saffron
Newborn & Winter Care🔴 High Medical Caution

Using Kangri / Bukhari Near Sleeping Newborns

Traditional Kashmiri Belief:

"Keeping a burning Kangri or coal Bukhari close to the newborn infant bed for winter warmth."

Medical Verdict by Dr. Zahoor Hussain Daraz:

Burning coal releases invisible Carbon Monoxide gas and severe dry smoke, which can cause sudden infant breathing distress or carbon monoxide poisoning. Instead, use electric blowers, oil-filled radiators, or practice skin-to-skin Kangaroo Mother Care inside a warm blanket.

Never place Kangri under newborn blankets Keep room well ventilated Use electric oil radiators or Kangaroo Mother Care
Postpartum & Lactation🟢 Medical Approval

Kashmiri Haakh (Spinach) & Mutton Broth Post-Delivery

Traditional Kashmiri Belief:

"Feeding the new mother fresh Kashmiri Haakh (collard greens) and traditional mutton bone broth after delivery."

Medical Verdict by Dr. Berkheez Shabir:

Kashmiri Haakh is rich in iron, calcium, and dietary fiber, preventing postpartum constipation. Mutton bone broth provides essential protein, collagen, and electrolytes needed for rapid uterine recovery and abundant breast milk production.

Cook with moderate oil and spice Include plenty of water and fluids Pair with iron-rich foods
Newborn & Winter Care🟡 Modify Safely

Warm Mustard Oil Massage for Infants in Winter

Traditional Kashmiri Belief:

"Massaging the newborn baby with warmed mustard oil before bath in Kashmiri winters."

Medical Verdict by Dr. Zahoor Hussain Daraz:

Pungent raw mustard oil can irritate sensitive newborn skin and cause skin barrier breakdown. We recommend using sterile coconut oil or cold-pressed sweet almond oil. If using mustard oil, ensure it is thoroughly tested, mild, and wiped off after 15 minutes.

Do a 24-hour patch test on baby leg first Avoid pungent unrefined mustard oil on face Wipe off before bath
Postpartum & Lactation🟢 Medical Approval

Kashmiri Almonds, Dates & Dry Fruit Powders for Mothers

Traditional Kashmiri Belief:

"Giving nursing mothers crushed Kashmiri almonds, dates, and dry fruit mix with warm milk."

Medical Verdict by Dr. Zahoor Hussain Daraz & Dr. Berkheez Shabir:

Almonds and dates are natural galactagogues that stimulate prolactin for breast milk production. Dates also replenish iron stores after delivery, making this a fantastic traditional Kashmiri postpartum superfood.

Eat 4-5 soaked almonds and 2 dates daily Combine with warm milk Stay well hydrated
